Khoj update |5D & 5F| 21.02.24

“Strong communities are built around local, real food. Food we trust to nourish our bodies, the farmer and planet.”                                   ― Kimbal Musk

The students of Grade 5D and 5F arrived for their last Khoj visit, eager for an enriching opportunity to immerse themselves in the life of farmers and witness firsthand the fruits of their labor with one final harvest. Despite a slight delay due to an unexpected issue with one of the buses, anticipation and excitement filled the air as they set off for the farm. They reached their destination by 8:25 am. Welcomed warmly by their instructors and farmers, the students started the day’s activities after a nutritious breakfast.

While one section observed the crop status and conducted a detailed survey of mustard seeds to learn the concept of ‘Surplus in Farming’, the other section actively participated in crop harvesting, reaping beetroot, peas, spinach, and radish. The session on surplus in farming led to a discussion of techniques to preserve seeds for future needs, offering a comprehensive understanding of the seed cycle. From sowing to harvesting and redistribution, students marveled at the ways in which nature provides and sustains itself by using each and every part of the crop. Their learning was consolidated through hands-on activities in the field and calculating the surplus using a worksheet.

After a refreshing lemonade and cookie break, the students swapped activities. Following a scrumptious lunch scheduled for 1:00 pm, students will engage in a Q&A session with farmers, delving deeper into the challenges and joys that farmers face in their day-to-day life. This session will culminate in self-reflection, allowing students to connect deeply with the entire Khoj experience, reflect on their key learnings, and take away valuable insights.

Before departing for school at 4:00 pm, students will enjoy warm milk and snacks, aiming to arrive back at school by 5:00 pm, enriched by their immersive farm experience.
